Description:

The American Eskimo Dog, with its spitz-like features, comes in all white and makes a highly rated family pet. The dog has a double coat, with ears that are thick and short, making them resistant to cold. Eskimo Dogs are bred as standard, miniature, and toy versions.

History Of The American Eskimo Dog:

American Eskimo Dog's are often seen to resemble a spitz breed - a common error that isn't without merit, as the Eskie has a bloodline that follows a spitz variety descending from Germany. Other breeds to influences the make-up of this breed includes the Keeshond, Volpino Italiano, and Pomeranian.

It’s believed that the Eskie was taken to the US via European workers. By 1913, they started to be acknowledged with the UKC. In the 1920's the dog breed became known as the American Spitz in the US, and were often seen in circus acts. At the end of WWI American Spits received a change in name - which is today's name of American Eskimo Dog. In 1994 the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club.

American Eskimo Dog Care:

The Eskie is need of ample exercise on a daily basis - with the amount of activity dependent of the class of American Eskimo Dog. The toy and miniature versions are content with a short walk and some playtime at home. The standard version needs one or two brisk walks each day on a secure leash. Adding in running and playing will also be appreciated.

The American Eskimo Dog's are content in cool climates as they will thrive in these conditions - as its name suggests. A breed that isn't meant for the warmer temperature conditions. All Eskies should be seen as a house dog, often spending a lot of time with its family. Grooming needs are a good brushing once or twice a week for its thick coat.

Health Information:

Health conditions seen with an American Eskimo Dog include CHD, patellar luxation, CHD, with diabetes seen rarely. Vets recommend that this breed is checked for knee, hip, and eye related problems.
