Description:

The origin of the American Water Spaniel dog breed doesn't appear to of been officially reported. Although, dog enthusiasts agree that a combination of the Curly Coated Retriever, English Water Spaniel, Tweed Water Spaniel, and the Irish Water Spaniel all featured in the equation. That theory is largely based on the breed's appearance.

A further theory being that American Water Spaniels were created by the American Indian that had tribes situated in the Great Lakes areas. Whatever the origin of this breed – it is indisputable that this dog became established and popular as a hunt companion in the Midwestern region of the U.S.

The American Water Spaniel are small dogs that have an amazingly keen sense of smell and water-proof coat, thus ideal for hunts in rough terrain on land and in water.

The American Water Spaniel was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1940. Prior to being recognized by the AKC, this breed was purely a working dog. Soon after, the Water Spaniel started to be breed by enthusiasts as a show and companion dog.

American Water Spaniel Temperament:

These Spaniels can make the ideal family companion. Always willing to please and lovable towards theirs owners. Can be timid, yet others can come across as aggressive towards a strange dog.

The American Water Spaniel loves being in the water and has a natural ability to hunt and swim.

Care:

This breed needs vigorous exercise on a daily basis. Take the American Water Spaniel for two to three walks is often sufficient, but taking a run is best. This breed prefers to live inside with its family, but still requires the ability to roam outside in a secure area when possible. Weekly brushing is a must for this Spaniel due to its long coat. Clipping the topknot, feet, and ear can be done to maintain the appearance.

Health Information:

Health concerns seen with the American Water Spaniel include Mitral Valve Disease, Pulmonic Stenosis, PDA, and CHD. On occasion Patellar Luxation and PRA are seen – although these are rare.
