Description: The Anatolian Shepherd is a breed that fits the bill as a serious family protector and therefore able to excel as a security dog. As an excellent watchdog, this dog breed is often suspicious of other animals and strangers. A devoted family pet, with an affectionate and easy going personality, Anatolian Shepherds can make the ideal companion.

History of The Anatolian Shepherd: The Anatolian Shepherd breed started-out as a work dog, with an original purpose of guarding flock, in the country of Turkey. In addition, today, this canine is still a dependable guard dog.

Studies indicate the Anatolian Shepherd has a bloodline that dates back some 4000 years to Tibetan Mastiff and Roman Molossian war dogs. A breed able to deter predators, such as wolves and bears from valuable livestock.

The Anatolian Shepherd didn't arrive in the US until the 1950's and although this breeds was effective in guard dog duties, guarding livestock against wolves, coyotes, and other such perils, this canine wasn't a popular addition to a household until 1980's

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Anatolian Shepherd in 1996 and initially featured as part of the miscellaneous class, before later moving on to the working group soon after.

Anatolian Shepherd Temperament: A breed in need of ample exercise - a brisk walk on a leash or run in the mornings will often do the job. Anatolian Shepherds can live outdoors in a secure yard if need be, although this is within suitable weather conditions, and a breed that prefers to sleep inside with its family at nights. Grooming often consists of a good brush once a week to remove dead hairs.

Health Information: The Anatolian Shepherd is overall a healthy breed, with health concerns seen include CHD and Entropion. Vets recommend that this canine is tested for potential eye and hip problems.
