DESCRIPTION - The Basenji is one of the most primitive of dog breeds and initially located by Pygmy hunters in the Africa Congo. Used as pack hunters by the early tribes to help drive game into a trap.
The Basenji dog breed started to arrive on the shores of England during the 1800's and 1900's, although many were lost due to distemper. Later in the 1930's, Basenji's were again brought to the U.K. and became the foundation for all later breeds to take place out of Africa.
It was at this stage that the word 'Basenji' became the official name of this breed of dog – it means 'bush thing'. More of these dogs started to arrive in England and followed later to America.
This Basenji soon became a popular choice as a household pet. In time, enthusiasts of this breed started to enter them into a variety of dog shows.
BASENJI TEMPERAMENT – The Basenji breed is a feisty and displays a behavior that's similar to a Terrier. They are extremely smart, clever, stubborn at times, and inquisitive. A lot of dog enthusiasts compare them to a feline cat in relation to attitude, as they are reserved, and independent.
This breed enjoys a chase or to hunt at any possible opportunity. Its natural roots are that of hunting, so a Basenji is in need of mental stimulation, play and plenty of exercising. Basenji dogs don't bark that often, it at all.
BASENJI CARE – This dog is considered to be one that's easy to keep and maintain. It is important to offer physical and mental activity on a daily basis. This exercise can consist of a brisk walk or games such as fetching and chasing.
The Basenji will enjoy being allowed to roam outside during the daytime, and to return to the family home during the nights. If adequate space is available in a fenced in area, leaving the Basenji to play outdoors is suggested.
HEALTH INFORMATION – the health concerns of a major nature seen in a Basenji are that of Fanconi syndrome, PRA, and Basenji enteropathy. Minor concerns are hypothyroidism, PPM, PK, and umbilical hernias.
