Description:

The exact origin of the Bearded Collie isn't known for certain, although it's been estimated that this breed started off from one of two breeds: the Magyar Komondor and the Lowland Polish sheep dog.

It is know for sure, on specific records, that a Lowland Polish sheep dog was brought to Scotland by Polish traders in 1514.

Solid evidence of the Bearded Collie dog didn't appear until the early 19th century – this way the time it was published officially.

The Bearded Collie breed was used as working dogs to herd sheep to drive cattle across rough terrain. They were seemingly tireless and tough throughout these long journeys. Its duties as a herder lasted in Scotland until the Victoria era, at this time the Bearded Collie started to gain favor as a show dog.

After WWI, this breed was once more valued for its abilities as a herding dog. The Bearded Collie are now just as useful as a herder after the war as they were in the 18th century.

In time, breeders that showed an interest in the Bearded Collie dogs took some of these dogs to America and England that this breed was at last officially acknowledge by the American Kennel Club in 1977.

Bearded Collie Temperament:

The Bearded Collie breed is noted as being playful, high energy levels, and overly enthusiastic. This breed has a high intellect that results in an ease in obedience training. The Collie enjoys being with children, but might be overly rambunctious with a small child.

Care:

This breed is abundant in energy and it will be necessary to give several walk or a good jog every day. The Bearded Collie will prefer to live indoors with its family, but can stay outside in cool weather if necessary. To combat the long coat a thorough brushing will be necessary every other day or so.

Health Information:

There are no health related concerns of a major nature to note, but on occasion the minor issues to be aware of are CHD, Addison's, colonic disease, epilepsy, and pemphigus.
