A dog in need of constant interaction with its master to remain content, and also a great breed with children.

History Of The Black Russian Terrier:

The origins of the Black Russian Terrier didn't start until 1950's Soviet Union. These dogs came about because of the Russians needing a working dog to operate along side its military. In order to prepare for this, dozens of dog breeds were imported from various countries to cross-breed a desirable working dog.

The initial generation of Black Russian's came from an impressive Giant Schnauzer, named Roy, who bred with several different breeds. It was determined that the most successful litters were those bred with a Moscow Water Dog, Airedale Terrier, and Rottweiler.

Later in 1957, the next generation of puppies was sent on numerous family breeding programs. The aim now was to improve on a dog's abilities as a working dog. The resulting Black Russian Terrier where used for finding wounded soldiers, to detect explosives, pulling sledges, and other duties for the military. Serving in both Afghanistan and Bosnia missions.

In time as more Black Russian Terrier breeders appeared the popularity of this dog soon developed across the world. In 2001, the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) within the Miscellaneous group, and in 2004 moved on to the Working Group.

Black Russian Terrier Care:

Exercise for this breed is a must, with its inherent need for work. To help with a Black Russian Terrier's need for action, on going agility training and obedience training is suggested.

The breed is calm and highly affectionate, so great with small children around and doesn’t bark that often. The Black Russian Terrier can live outside if need be, but will prefer to return to its family’s home at nights. Grooming consists of a good brushing once or twice each week, with a major clipping job every five to six months.

Health Concerns:

Health concerns seen with the Black Russian Terrier breed include elbow dysplasia and CHD, with PRA and dwarfism seen rarely. Vets recommend that these dogs are checked for elbow, hip, and eye related problems.
