Description:

Border collies have been bred of over one hundred years, with functionality being the main concern. This dog breed was abundant in England throughout the 1800's; however there was a variety of different types. These fetching or herding dogs had the ability to guide and circle herds towards the shepherd.

The Border Collies (or sheepdogs at the time) become very popular at the time of the first official sheepdog trails in 1873 – this tested the functions and qualities of the animals.

Even after functioning superbly at the sheepdog trails and being very popular, it was later in 1915 that 'Border Collie' was officially announce as the name of this breed. On arrival in the United States they were soon assessed by shepherds, and being declared as an outstanding herding breed.

It wasn't until 1995 that the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Border Collie as a show dog.

Border Collie Temperament:

The Border Collie dog breed is highly obedient and is known for its high intelligence level. The collie isn't the type of breed that gets on well as a house dog in an enclosed space with limited or little exercise. A very protective and loyal breed towards its family, that often displays a guardian-like and reserved personality in the company of strange animals.

Care:

This breed is in need of mental and physical stimulation on a day to day basis. A breed that is work-oriented and hereditarily programmed for labour.

Border Collie dogs are able to live outside in mild to cool climates, but will prefer to be indoors, especially at night, with the family. This is one breed that isn't going to appreciate being confined to small apartment living.

Health Information:

The major health concerns for this breed is CHD. Health issues of a minor nature are PRA, Hypothyroidism, PDA, Seizures, CEA, Lens Luxation, and OCD (although these conditions are often rare).
