In addition, a Borzoi can be timid, especially in the presence of a stranger.

History of The Borzoi:

Borzoi (also known as 'Russian Wolfhound') originated in Russia and has been in existence since the Middle ages. Studies on this breed date back to times when Russian aristocracy bred it over a long-period of time.

As a way to improve on the Borzois coat and to increase size, cross breeding with bear hounds and Russian Sheepdogs was believed to of taken place. This in turn resulted in a breed able to hunt wolf in cooler climates. Often left to hunt in packs of 3's with 1 female and 2 males - which were able to swiftly take a wolf down with precision and hold it until its master arrived.

In the 1800's at least seven different types of Borzoi dogs appeared in Russia. Borzoi dogs known today derived from the Perchino class. In time of the Russian Revolution, a lot of the Borzoi dogs were killed. And later able to survive due to care of foreign royalty that controlled several Borzoi kennels. Modern Borzoi's are common in dog shows, used as a coursing dog, and often seen modeling in magazines.

Borzoi Temperament:

In line with almost all Hound Group members, a Borzoi is in need of lot of daily physical exercise. A walk on a leash to several laps jogging outside in a open area are perfect activities to take part in. Having a secure fenced yard during the day is also welcomed.

A breed able to stay outside in the daytime, but preferring to sleep inside with its family at night. Able to handle temperatures that are moderately cool, although not so keen on warmer climates. Grooming a Borzoi requires a good brushing 2 to 3 times per week, as its a breed with a long coat that tends to keep shedding.

Health Information:

Health problems seen in the Borzoi include Gastric Torsion, Cardiomyopathy, and Hypothyroidism. Vets recommended this breed is checked for Thyroid and Cardiac problems.
