History Of The Brittany:
Its believed that in the mid 1800s French natives cross-bred their own regional small spaniels with a English Setter. The aim was to create a breed more suited to their requirements. Although, the offspring were born without a tail and this trait followed their descendants (some being stub-tailed).
The resulting offspring developed an amazing ability to track scent, which made them highly rated woodcock hunters. These dogs soon became favored with local poachers and the French gentry. Poachers admired these dogs in view of their intense obedient behavior and the ability to point and retrieve better than others breed of the time.
It wasn't until 1925 that the Brittany first arrived in the US. It did take some time for the breed to be accepted, for several reason, one of which hunters delivered a hunting dog should have a long tail. But once the Brittany was put through its paces it soon became a hit with dog enthusiasts and hunters alike.
Brittany Temperament:
The Brittany dog is in need of ample exercise to remain healthy and content. If cooped up without sufficient exercise the dog can be destructive by scratching and digging, and causing mayhem in the yard or house.
For that reason a Brittany isn’t suit to living in a small apartment. This breed is in need of open space to explore and run, so a secure backyard would be ideal. Brittany's are able to live outside in suitable climate condition, although will much prefer to live inside with its family.
Health Information:
Health concerns seen with the Brittany breed include CHD, Epilepsy, and Hypothyroidism. Vets recommend that this dog is checked for thyroid and hip problems.
