History Of The Brussels Griffon:

The origin of the Brussels Griffon is recorded as far back as the 1800's Belgium. The original function for this breed was as a companion and rodent hunter. Today, this breed continues as a fun and love companion dog for families across the world.

Studies indicate that this breed descended from a street dog (called a Griffon d' Ecuire) and an Affenpinscher. This breed was favored by local cab drivers in Belgium, due to its knack of attracting attention and to ward off undesirables.

In late 1800's the Brussels Griffon was cross-bred with a Pug - a favored small breed in Holland. Characteristics of the Pug breed can be noticed in today's Brussels Griffon's - referring to the shape of the head.

The breed was recognized enough to be exhibited in Belgian dog shows by 1880. In early 1900's the popularity of the Brussels Griffon had grown dramatically. However at the time of WWI the breed declined in numbers sharply, but gradually rose back to its prior popularity at the end of the war.
