When Romans travelled across Israel some 2000 years ago, and dislodged its people, dogs where left to fend for themselves, living off the Sebulon coastal plain and Negev desert. Puppies where taken in by Bedouins and trained to guard their livestock. This continued for numerous years resulting in a breed that become accustomed to protecting and herding animals.
The continuation of this breed is in part down to the efforts of Dr. Rudolphina Menzel. Dr Menzel captured these feral, native dogs, and begin with a breeding program. In time, made headway as fearless sentry dogs, trustworthy messengers, and assisted in detecting mines in WWII. The Canaan dogs first appeared in the United States in 1965, and later in 1997 was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) within the Herding group.
