The Chinese Crested Dog is a devoted family companion that's always aiming to please, and looking for games and fun, while still being a gentle breed that loves to settle on your lap. A toy dog that's friendly with other dogs and pets in a household, and even at ease with strangers.
History Of The Chinese Crested Dog:
Its believed that the origin of these adorable toy dogs is China, the precise beginnings of this breed has been difficult to understand. A lot of the hairless dogs are seen as mutations that appear from various regions of the globe, often so in Central America and South America. Although, the
Chinese Crested Dog displays some strong evidence that this breed started out in Africa, and later taken to China.
Studies indicate that the bloodline of the breed dates back to 13th century China. The Chinese Crested Dog arrived in other far flung regions of the world when the Chinese people used the dogs on ships as pest or rodent catchers. Often being traded on other shores to local merchants. Such trades resulted in the breed arriving in Turkey, Egypt, and South Africa.
Chinese Crested Dogs where often depicted in drawings throughout Europe in the 1800's. In time this breed arrived in the United States and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1991.
Chinese Crested Dog Temperament:
A Chinese Crested Dog loves to spend time outside in a secure yard, but isn't going to fare that well in cooler climates. Exercise often consists of a short walk or even running inside a house is sufficient due to their small size.
These toy dogs love to climb and jump at objects that can be safely reached. Grooming calls for a frequent trimming of neck, head, feet, and tail. A hairless Crested Dog will be in need of moisturized to help in keeping skin healthy. On a sunny day applying sun block is also advisable.
Health Information:
Health related matters with a Chinese Crested Dog include glaucoma, PRA, lens luxation, deafness, patellar luxation, and seizures, with Legg-Perthes seen rarely. Vets recommend that this breed is inspected for potential hearing, eye, and knee related problems.
