Description:

The Clumber Spaniel is one of the more easy-going members of the sporting group - and not as boisterous and high-energetic as some. A low-key and calm breed but is always more content out in a field or enjoying a hunt.

A dog breed that can be somewhat lazy and quiet when in familiar surrounds, especially at home. Often it’s a case of needing to coax a Clumber Spaniel to get up and moving. These dogs are suited to apartment living and a favored breed with city dwellers.

History Of The Clumber Spaniel:

The origins of the Clumber Spaniel dates back to some time in the late 1700's and is one of the stockiest and oldest spaniels to exist. It isn't clear how the breed first existed, but research indicated that a mixture of the Basset Hound (low-bodied) and the Alpine Spaniel (heavy headed) were instrumental in creating the first Clumber dogs.

The breed wasn't given a proper name until the time of the French Revolution - the reference to 'Clumber' came about as a result of Duc de Noailles of France transporting his stock of spaniels to Clumber Park, and there resided the Duke of Newcastle English estate.

The Clumber Spaniel was soon favored by all English nobility. The paramount features were the breeds hunting abilities, retrieving skills, and slow demeanor. In that point in history, Clumber's weren't available to common people. A breed that was kept to the nobility and discourage others from taking an interest.

In late 1800's the Clumber Spaniel first arrived in the US and soon establish itself as a popular breed. Soon exhibited on shows, while still relying on their main strength of hunting.

Clumber Spaniel Care:

In order to keep up with its exercise routine a Clumber Spaniel needs daily outings, often a longish walk on a leash or a stroll along a trail is sufficient. Grooming consists of a good brushing two or three time per week, as well as bathing to maintain a clean coat.

Health Information:

Health concerns seen with a Clumber Spaniel include Intervertebral disk disease, ectropion, otitis externa, and entropion. Vets recommend that this breed is check for potential eye, elbow, and hip related problems.
