The Cocker spaniel (American version) was derived from its English cousin after arriving in the United States in the late 1800's.
The American Cocker dogs were breed somewhat differently in size (ideal for hunting quail and various other birds) and coloring to that recognized as the English Cocker Spaniel. The decision and exact practice to which the American Spaniel was bred isn't totally known.
In 1935 the American Kennel Club distinguished the English Cocker Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel as two individual breeds. Prior to this these breeds were considered to be the same. The Cocker Spaniel is now one of the most popular dog breeds.
Cocker Spaniel Temperament:
The Cocker Spaniel is always willing to please, playful, and extremely cheerful. They can make the ideal family pet and wonderful with small children. Their affection and friendliness level towards people and other animals is one of the highest.
Obedience training with the Cocker Spaniel is considered to be easy and can be classed as a moderate watchdog.
Care:
Cocker Spaniel grooming can take a little work on a day to day basis. Trimming the coat at least once per month can be beneficial to maintain a clean and tidy coat.
Exercise for a Cocker Spaniel can consist of plenty of daily activity, with at least one walk on a daily basis. This breed prefers to live inside with its family, although keeping it socialized with other pets and people should be counted as a necessity.
Health Information:
Health concerns of a major nature include Glaucoma, Patellar Luxation, PRA, and Cataracts. Additional health concerns include Fructokinase Deficiency, Entropion, Seborrhea, Liver Disease, CHF, Urinary Stones, Cardiomyopathy, Hypothyroidism, Cherry Eye, and Allergies. The Cocker Spaniel life span is on average 12 to 15 years.
