Description:

The Curly Coated Retriever is blessed with boundless energy, so one of the best all-around sporting breeds, for retrieving on land and in water. The breed has a tolerance for cooler water temperatures, which allows this breed to hunt throughout icy winter months.

Curly Coated Retriever's are able to make delightful household pets, with a breed that's gentle and sensitive to its masters commands. As a hunter, these retrievers can be fierce, but will return to a relaxed and calm demeanor once inside.

History Of The Curly Coated Retriever:

The CCR is one of the longest established retriever breeds, with its bloodline being traced back to the early 1700's England. Although, the precise origins of this breed isn't clear. Studies indicate that descendants of Curly Coated Retriever's include crosses with the Irish Water Spaniel, Old English Water Dog a small Newfoundland cross.

All combined, the dog breeds noted indicate the crossing of the finest water dogs to result in the creation of today's Curly Coated Retriever. Also introduced to the breeding process at a later date was the Poodle. With the Poodle added to the bloodline, it resulted in the distinctive curly coat - all complete different to other members of the sporting group.

By mid 1800's Curly Coated Retriever's were the most admired retriever breed in England. A popular dog for its ability to retrieve as well as being a companion dog that could be trusted. In time, the dogs arrived in Australia, New Zealand, and later appeared in the United States in 1907. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1924.

Curly Coated Retriever Care:

These dogs are easy to maintain, with a need for daily exercise, and will appreciate if take out retrieving or swimming. An ideal dog either inside or out, although this isn't a dog that can live in a small apartment or condominium.

The Curly Coated Retriever can live outside if need be, with adequate protection or shelter, even so this dog will with a preference to return to its families home at night.

Health Information:

Heath problems seen with a Curly Coated Retriever include CHD, with distichiasis and cataracts seen rarely. Vets recommend that this breed is checked for possible hip related concerns.
