History of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier:
Dandies are noted as having an unusual appearance for a member of the Terrier Group, with its roots originating in a region that bordered England and Scotland. First seen in the 1700's as a service dog, with farmers depending on them to assist in hunting small animals, such as badgers, otters, and foxes.
Prior to being coined as a Dandie this breed was referred to under several different names. At one stage Pepper Terriers, Catcleugh Terrier, Hindlee Terrier, and Mustard Terrier were common names for this dog breed. A lot of these terrier breeds were owned by a gentleman name Mr. James Davidson.
It’s believed that those James Davidsons dogs were depicted as models for Dandie Dinmont characters to feature in a novel title 'Guy Mannering', and written by Sir W Scott. So, in time those does soon where recognized as a Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and in 1873 known as their own breed. A dog breed that's still seen around the world, but no were near as popular as some of other members of the terrier group.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier Temperament:
A Dandie Dinmont Terrier has a high energy level, so in need of an active lifestyle with plenty of outdoor playtime, and daily exercise. A breed that also enjoys exploring and hunting for small animals in a park or yard.
Living arrangements for a Dandie is access to a secure yard throughout the day, while returning to the families’ home for sleeping at nights. Grooming consists of a good brushing twice a week, and a professional shaping and clipping three to four times a year.
Health Information:
Health conditions seen in a Dandie include Intervertebral Disk Disease, Glaucoma, and Cheyletiella Mites. Vets recommend that tests are done for Eye related conditions.
