TIP: Attempt these exercises one to two weeks prior to starting a long journey.
[1] With the car parked in the drive (leave the engine off at this time), open the back-door and let the dog jump inside. Leave the dog to spend some time in the vehicle. Offer a chew bone, snack or toy to keep him entertained. This allows a dog to become comfortable inside a vehicle.
[2] As the dog becomes more comfortable in the vehicle, shut the door. Windows can be rolled down slightly. Remain close whilst the dogs gets used to being shut inside.
[3] If the dog remains relaxed - get in, start the engine, and take a short ride around the block. On returning to the drive, be sure to offer a treat for good behavior - such as a nice walk or a game of fetch.
Repeat steps 1 to 3, with a slightly increased distance on each outing. In time dog car travel will start to look forward to jumping inside a car for its next adventure.
