Dogs that enjoy regular exercise are calmer, less restless, and more social in public areas. Even so, choosing the ideal exercise for your dog can depend on several issues – these are the type of breed, size and age.
TYPE OF BREED – the type of breed is a big factor in a dogs exercise requirements. Dogs that were bred to herd, for instance the German Shepherd, Border Collie, and Australian Cattle Dog need exercise on a daily basis.
So will the breeds that were bred as hunting or sled dogs, such as the German Hunt Terrier, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Beagle [Hunting] and the Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed, and Siberian Husky [Sled].
SIZE – a large breed of dog doesn't always equate to needing more exercise than a small breed. In fact, a large breed such as the Great Dane or Mastiff would prefer to sit and relax on the porch than go out on a two mile jog. Although, a thirty minute walk once of twice daily is still necessary.
Small breeds that like to continue going even after a 3 mile hike include the Chihuahua and Jack Russell Terrier.
AGE – a young puppy is in need of daily exercise for the proper muscle development. Exercising is the best way to release their high levels of energy. If unable to release the pent-up energy, destructive behaviour such as digging and chewing is witnessed.
Then again, a mature dog is in need of less exercise due to their diminishing energy levels. |
