Description:
The English Cocker Spaniel is a complete hunter at heart, with a flowing, long coat, and loving soft eyes. The English version of the Cocker Spaniel is believed to retain more of its hunting tendencies than the American breed.
The English spaniel is also in need of more exercise than that of its American cousin. These dogs can be described as protective, demonstrative, sensitive and inquisitive.
History Of The English Cocker Spaniel:
Throughout the 1800's, the smaller spaniel breeds were used for hunting woodcock and large edition used for springing game. English Cocker Spaniel's are land spaniels.
Both the larger-sized and small edition of spaniel was in effect two editions of the same canine. It was not until 1893 that these breeds were categorized into two separate breeds. The small edition was given the name of Cocker Spaniel, and should weigh in less than 25lbs. As both of these dog breeds share a similar bloodline, the same talents and hunting abilities are seen.
In 1901, the breed’s weight limit was terminated and English Cocker Spaniel's soon grew in popularity in England. While in America, the traits of the breed were changed by breeders to more suit their requirements. Later in 1936 the establishment of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America first appeared.
English Cocker Spaniel Care:
The English Cocker Spaniel is in need of ample vigorous exercise on a daily basis; this can come from a quick walk on a leash or run in a open field. Games throughout the day in a secure yard are appreciated to complete the exercise routine.
The English Cocker Spaniels are able live outdoors if required, but not in climate conditions in the extreme - either souring heat or cold. Grooming consists of a good brushing every two to three days, with the feet, eyes, and head to be clipped on a monthly basis.
Health Information:
Health concerns seen with an English Cocker Spaniel include PRA, patellar luxation, CHD, cataracts, kidney disease, and hypothyroidism, with cardiomyopathy rarely seen. Vets recommend that his breed is checked for hearing, knee, thyroid, eye, and hip problems.
