Description:
The Mastiff is surprisingly gentle, calm, good-natured and easy going for a large breed. A well mannered dog that's able to fit into most households. In need of plenty of space to move around - the English Mastiff breed isn't suited to living in a small apartment.
The English Mastiff dog is seen as an excellent choice for families with small children, as this breed is loyal and utterly devoted to its owner. Exhibits a high level of affection and gets on well with other household pets.
One more positive aspect to the Mastiff breed is its ability as a watchdog to guard the family with its quickness and strength.
English Mastiff Care:
Exercise for an adult Mastiff dog is typically a ten to fifteen minute walk (brisk pace). Also, this breed will enjoy physical games in a secure garden.
The Mastiff can live outside in a kennel or inside with its family. This breed isn't keen on the warmer weather. So, if left outside during the summer months – make certain that plenty of shade is available. Even so, the ideal situation for a Mastiff is to be living inside, as it's generically geared to protecting its family (or pack).
Health Information:
The health concerns of a major nature include Gastric Torsion and CHD. Also, look out for Osteosarcoma, Cystinuria, and Elbow Dysplasia. Be certain to monitor the food intake of the Mastiff, as this breed is prone to becoming overweight or obese.
Vets recommend that English Mastiff dogs are specifically tested for Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Thyroid, and Eye Problems.
