DESCRIPTION - The ancestors of the English Setter dog breed are believed to be the Spanish Pointer, Springer Spaniel, and Large Water Spaniel. The initial function of this breed was to locate and track game for their masters.
In the 1820's specific breeding for the English Setter was started by a gentleman named Edward Laverack – this continued for over 30 years. In fact, those dogs went on to establish the base-line of the English Setter breed seen today. Others breeders continued to bred the English Setter, but with a specific emphasis in mind, such as the breeds field abilities.
The English Setter dogs have grown in popularity in the United States due to its usefulness and beauty.
ENGLISH SETTER TEMPERAMENT – the English Setter is an amiable breed that is often relaxed and calm, and ideal as a family pet. Being out and able to run is a favourite pastime for this breed. This is certainly one breed that cannot be left inside for a long period of time without exercise.
CARE - upkeep for an English Setter calls for adequate physical stimulation on a daily basis. One hour of a good fast-paced run is required every day. This breed prefers to live inside with its family, but should have the option of being able to roam outside most of the day.
GROOMING – with its long coat, this breed might prove difficult to keep shiny and clean. Brushing is needed at least two to three times a week, or every other day.
HEALTH INFORMATION – health issues of a major concern are Elbow Dysplasia, Deafness, CHD, and Hypothyroidism. Minor issues are OCD and PRA. Epilepsy is occasionally seen in this breed.
