English Springer Spaniel Dog Breed

The English Springer Spaniel offers a personality that's always cheerful, able to run and play for literally hours, and makes a highly-rated family companion. These dogs are more content when playing with its owners and roaming in the yard, it left unoccupied for too long inside, a Springer will soon become restless, and frustration sets in quickly.

History Of The English Springer Spaniel:

As spaniel breeds started to become more specialized and popular, the land spaniels of the larger size some established themselves as proficient dogs for flushing game. Prior to using guns, hunter's relied on their land spaniels to flush prey, which would than be caught by nets at the hands of the dogs master.

The Springer breed is believed to be first mentioned in late 1500's and sometime later in the 1800's, it became possible to trace particular breeds of Springer dogs. One notable breed came from the Duke of Norfolk, whose breeds helped to influence the English Springer Spaniel's seen today.

The origins of these dogs was complicated even more so by the fact that a small variation of the dog, a Cocker Spaniel, and a larger-sized Springer, were seen as the same breed, although in two different sizes. It wasn't until later in 1902 that the Springer was recognized as a separate breed by the English Kennel Club.

English Springer Spaniel Care:

These dogs are in need of ample daily exercise to remain content, so having access to an outside space throughout the day is preferable. Small apartment living isn't suited to this breed of dog.

English Springer Spaniel's can live outside for most of the day, but will prefer to return to its home at nights to be with its family. Grooming consists of a good brushing once or twice weekly as well as clipping the ears and feet three to four time per year.

Health Information:

Health concerns seen with the English Springer Spaniel include elbow dysplasia, CHD, PRA, otitis externa, retinal dysplasia, and phosphofructokinase, with gastric torsion, rage syndrome, seizures, and patellar luxation reported occasionally. Vets recommend that these dogs are checked for hip, knee, eye, and elbow problems.
