History Of The English Toy Spaniel: The origins of this breed began in England. English Toy Spaniels were used to flush out birds for hunters as well as being a devoted companion at home. And believed to share a common background to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, as both started out as a single breed, cross breed with small spaniels and Oriental toy breeds.

Early research indicates that this breed started with a Toy Spaniel which arrived in Scotland, transported from France, by Mary, Queen of Scots. A popular breed at that time with the rich and soon established itself as a lapdog for the wealthy. In the 17th century, at the high of its popularity, King Charles II was credited for giving the breed its official name - King Charles Spaniels.

Early King Charles Spaniels were black and tan in color with a variety of other shades to develop. In time, these dog breeds were bred down, which results in changes in the physical appearance - such as a flatter nose and a rounder shape. These later versions became known as English Toy Spaniels in the United States.

English Toy Spaniel Temperament: Often, toy dog breeds are spunky and very active in nature, although the English Toy Spaniel doesn't fit within this category. It’s a reserved, calm breed, that doesn't require too much activity to meet exercise needs. A walk on a leash twice daily is plenty.

A breed unable to tolerate heat that well and should be allow to sleep indoors with its family. Playtime in a secure yard is acceptable in cooler temperatures. To keep up with grooming needs a good brushing once or twice a week is desirable.

Health Information: Health concerns common with the English Toy Spaniel include Patellar Luxation, early Tooth Loss, PDA, and droopy Tongue. Vets recommend that this breed is checked for knee problems.
