In the 17th century, at the high of its popularity, King Charles II was credited for giving the breed its official name - King Charles Spaniels.
Early King Charles Spaniels were black and tan in color with a variety of other shades to develop. In time, these dog breeds were bred down, which results in changes in the physical appearance - such as a flatter nose and a rounder shape. These later versions became known as English Toy Spaniels in the United States.
