The Fox Terrier (Smooth) is a mischievous, independent, and bold breed that's always feisty and alert. A breed that's quick to pick-up all forms of dog training and tricks. Often seen to be friendly with other pets and dogs, but more reserved when in the presence of strangers.

Smooth Fox Terriers are an energetic and active member of the Terrier Group. A breed with a high energy level that's in need of ample time outside to run and play, so more suitable for active families on the go.

History Of The Smooth Fox Terrier:

It is believed that the Fox Terrier (Smooth) has been around since the late 1700's, although there isn't any documentary proof to back this up. The origins of this breed is England, and one of the first dogs to appear in the show ring. The function of the Fox Terrier started out as a hunter for small animals and to scare off foxes. Often hunting with a pack of Foxhounds out on the trails.

For a short period the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers' were crossbred - although this practice wasn't to last long. The interbreeding practice came to a stop long before the later 1900's, so the two distinct breeds were individually recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1985. Today's Fox Terrier (Smooth) is a popular house pet and often seen to be entered into earth dog trail events.

Smooth Fox Terrier Temperament:

A dog breed in need of a daily exercise routine to be kept content and to keep in check its high energy level. If left to their own devises the Smooth Fox Terrier can get destructive and frustrated. So, a pet ideal for those with sufficient spare time for play and fun with their dog.

A Fox Terrier (Smooth) is able to cope outdoors in moderately cold or warm temperatures, as long as the weather isn't in the extreme. Although this dog should be allowed to return to the families home at night. Grooming consists of a good brushing once weekly to remove all dead hairs. Smooth coated terriers are more inclined to shed than that of their wired counterparts.

Health Information:

Health concerns seen with a Smooth Fox Terrier include lens luxation, distichiasis, Legg-Perthes, and cataracts, with deafness and patellar luxation seen rarely. Vets recommend that this breed is checked for eye related problems.
