History of The Wire Fox Terrier:

History dates back to 1800's in England. Having acted as hunting dogs and fox bolting as an original function. There are some indications suggesting that this dog breed shared history with Smooth Fox Terriers, with both experiencing the same background. Even so, to date there isn't any prove to this belief.

It is known that Wire Fox Terriers gained in popularity almost 20 years after Smooth Fox Terriers entered into dog shows. Both Fox Terrier breeds were interbreed for a period of time to aid in improving the wire class.

The popularity of the Wire Fox Terrier gaining significantly after WWII. It wasn't until 1985 that the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the breed, after splitting the smooth and wire versions into two individual breeds. Today these canines are seen as loving companions for families and often seen entered in earth dog trails.

Wire Fox Terrier Temperament:

A Wire Fox Terrier has tons of energy, and requires ample daily exercise to remain content, such as several brisk walks, as well as a play session outside in a secure yard.

A breed able to tolerate both cold and hot temperatures, although not in the extreme. So, an ideal dog to allow access throughout the day in a secure yard, and to return to be family home to sleep at nights. Grooming consists of a good brushing 2 to 3 times each week. It also helps to shape the rough coat to maintain it neat.
