Once indoors, an Ibizan can be a delightful pet with a well-mannered, quiet demeanor and a devoted companion for its family.
History Of The Ibizan Hound:
Ibizan Hounds lead back to Ancient times, from an area near the Balearic Islands. With an appearance that is somewhat similar to another Hound breed - the Pharaoh Hounds. And both of those breeds have a physical appearance similar to those seen depicted on Egyptian tombs.
Its believed that sea traders in Ancient Phoenician took this dog breed on a journey to the Balearics (Ibizan), and were left on those islands in isolation for some time. This is one reason why the Ibizan Hounds remained a pure breed without cross-breeding with other dogs. Little changes have been seen since its ancestral stock.
The Ibizan Hound didn’t arrive on US soil until the 1950's. On arrive the breed made quite an impression in view of its striking appearance. Even though it soon became a popular breed, the numbers still never really took off. It was later recognized by the Americal Kennel Club (AKC) in 1979. Still, today an Ibizan Hound is a rare dog to be seen.
Ibizan Hound Temperament:
If owning a Ibizan Hound it will call for someone with an active lifestyle. A daily sprint or run in a safe park is often enough to keep this dog content. Often, being most happy if able to fun at full speed, which does call for access to a large field. Having easy access to open land is often helpful with keeping a Ibizan Hound
This isn't one of the hound breeds that's meant to live outside. An Ibizan Hound will need access to a secure yard, but being able to return inside with its family at nights. Able to tolerate moderate heat but no so much if temperatures are cooler. Grooming consists of a good brushing once a week or so. Although, the wire-coated version is in need of a more frequent brushing.
