Description: The Lakeland Terrier is an affectionate breed, that’s loving and devoted to its family. A playful member of the Terrier Group, always on the look out for action and entertainment.

As with a lot of terrier dog breeds, the Lakeland Terrier makes a great watchdog, as its their nature to be mindful of strangers, especially on their territory. These terriers are often reserved in the presence of other pets and dogs, so it might be difficult mix other household pets with this breed.

History Of The Lakeland Terrier: Lakeland Terriers share a bloodline with Border Terriers, Bedlington Terriers, and Fox Terriers. A dog breed to first appear in England in the 1700's, with the original settlers used to kill and hunt foxes for farmers.

In time as fox-hunting gained in popularity as a sport event these terriers where often a favored choice with competitors. It was terriers in the Lakeland region that distinguished themselves as more aggressive at events and resulting in the most successful. The Lakeland Terrier was known by several names including Fell Terriers, Patterdale Terriers, and Elterwater Terriers, and later in 1921 granted the official name of Lakeland Terrier.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized this breed in 1934. A breed that has gone on to prove itself as a prize-winning show dog, although it hasn't gained the popularity as some other terriers as a family companion.

Lakeland Terrier Temperament: Lakeland terriers are highly-active and in need of ample exercise on a daily basis. A dog breed that's easily distracted, so training this breed can take some work, but always worth the effect in the long-run for a dog owner with patience.

A Lakeland terrier is able to tolerate moderately cool or hot temperatures, but shouldn't be left to sleep outside. Sleeping inside with its family after a long day exploring in a secure yard is ideal. Grooming consists of a thorough brushing two to three times per week. A professional clipping to its wiry coat is suggested once every three months or so.

Health Information: The Lakeland terrier is a healthy breed with no health concerns of a major nature common. Health conditions of a minor nature include Lens Luxation and Distichiasis. Legg-Perthes and vWD are rarely seen. Vets recommend that a Lakeland is tested for Eye Problems.
