The Lowchen (pronounced 'Lerv-chun') shares its origins with several members of the Bichon family, such as the Bichon Frise and Havanese.
The exact origin of the Lowchen breed isn't known, even though France, Germany, and Russia all claimed to have started this breed. It is known that canines that resembled the Lowchen breed (with the visible lion trim), were witnessed in German artwork in the 16th century.
The Lowchen dog almost became extinct during the 1960's when its numbers fell to almost nothing. Later being interbred extensively by two dog enthusiasts to revive the breed – this formed to the base of the Lowchen dog breed in the United States and Great Britain.
The Lowchen dog breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1996 and entered into the miscellaneous class. Later in 1999, the class for the Lowchen was revised to the non-sporting group.
Lowchen Temperament:
A high-spirited and lovable breed that is easy to train to always willing to please. Lowchen dogs have a friendly attitude with strangers and other animals.
Care:
Exercise needs for the Lowchen is a short walk on a leash on a daily basis or to a brief play session. These dogs also enjoy fun games and mental stimulation. The Lowchen is one breed that prefers to live inside with its family, but will be appreciate the freedom to roam in a secure yard if feasible. The Lowchen breed is in need of a thorough brush every other day. Clipping the coat every few months can help in maintaining the traditional lion trim.
Health Information:
The concerns of a health nature include Patellar Luxation (this is common with all small dog breeds).
