DESCRIPTION - The Neapolitan Mastiff dog breed has a strong powerful grip, and is extremely heavy-bodied. Its origins have been trace back to Asia and the Middle East – functioning as dogs of war dogs at one time. Put to work as a guard dog, to control livestock, and to fight large animals (such as lions and even elephants) and men in battle.
The present day Neapolitan Mastiff breed is believed to be related to the giant war dogs of Macedonia – these dogs were mixed with the short-hair wolfs of India. The result of this is the Molossus bloodline – which is counted as the progenitor to the large dog breeds seen today.
Later in history - as the Romans conquered Greece, their impressive Molossus dogs were adopted by the Romans. In 55 BC, the Romans invaded and took over Britain. The large Mastiff dogs of the British were soon admired by the Romans. These two breeds of dog fought valiantly throughout war.
In time these two breeds were bred together to create a giant war dog – called 'Mastini' (Italian for Mastiff). This breed continued to develop and was perfected over time to establish itself as a functioning guard dog. Even so, this breed remained isolated and unknown of the rest of the world.
This breed was introduced to the world in 1946 at the Naples dog show. A campaign was started by a gentlemen name Piere Scanziani to bring this breed out of obscurity.
It wasn't until the 1970's that Neapolitan Mastiff was documented within the U.S. It didn't need long for this breed to gain popularity and interest from enthusiasts. Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1996 and made an official member of the Working group in 2004.
NEAPOLITAN MASTIFF TEMPERAMENT – the Neapolitan Mastiff breed is devoted and loyal to its family members. Can often be suspicious and reserved with strangers – this is due to its breeding as a guard dog. Able to protect its family due to its fighting ability, size and rated as a first-class watchdog. Affectionate with children but can be dominant with strange dogs or other household pets.
