Description: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a beautiful breed that loves to roam, retrieve, and play outside. When it comes to fun with a Toller, be prepared to play for hours on end to expand some of its boundless energy.

These dogs are calm, yet alert, a breed that's able to adapt to most circumstances. Whether it’s hunting, playing, or a plain old walk on a leash, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever attempts to do everything with gusto.

History Of The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever: The origins of the Tolling Retriever dates back to 1800's, in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. Its believed that these dogs descended from the red European decoy dog mixed with a variety of spaniels, setters, retrievers, and farm collies. Alternatively, another theory is that these dogs are descendants of the tolling American Indian dogs.

The initial name for this breed was 'Little River Duck Dog' or a 'Yarmouth Toller' before its recognized name of Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was established. Later in 1915, the Canadian Kennel Club registered this breed, with at least fifteen tollers recorded that year.

These dogs started to arrive in the United States from 1960's onwards, and although soon to be a hit, it wasn't until 1984 that a club was established for this breed. That club was to be known as the Duck Tolling Retriever Club (U.S).

It was later in 2001 that the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was acknowledged by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as part of the miscellaneous, and moved over to the Sporting group in 2003.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Care: All dogs within the sporting group are in need of a rigorous exercise routine and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is no different. Be prepared for an active time, with daily runs, walks, and time in the water with a toller.

A dog that's highly affection, playful, and friendly with both household pets and other people. Although, these dogs will soon show weariness in the presence of strangers, if required. Living arrangements for this breed is space to roam outside throughout the day, and return to its families home at nights.

Health Information: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a healthy dog with CHD and PRA the only common health concerns seen with this breed. Vets recommend that these dogs are checked for eye and hip related problems.
