Old English Sheepdog Dog Breed
The Old English Sheepdog originated in western parts of England and is believed to be related to the Bearded Collie or the Russian Owtcharka.
The function of the early sheepdogs was to defend herds and flocks from attack by wolves. Later, in the 19th century, the Old English Sheepdogs was used to drive cattle and sheep to the markets.
The Old English Sheepdogs were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1905. Although, it wasn't until the 1970's that this breed started to become popular as family pet (as a result of media and advertising roles).
Old English Sheepdog Temperament:
A canine that is both well mannered and gentle with a happy-go-lucky temperament. This breed thrives in the companionship of its family. The Old English Sheepdog breed is rated highly in respect of its friendliness with visitors, household pets, and for its affection.
Care:
Exercise for this breed is typically a long walk or a medium paced jog – daily exercise is essential. The Old English Sheepdog can live outdoors in a kennel in the cooler weather, but still needs to be able to go inside if necessary. This is one breed that doesn't cope well in warm temperatures. With its thick coat, it is important to brush on almost a daily basis - If left unattended it can result in matting, and attract debris and dirt.
