A dog that's content in the company of other pets and animals, but can be reserved with strangers. A breed that can often be stubborn in learning new commands and tricks, and a personality that's independent.

History Of The Pekingese:

The origins of the Pekingese dogs started in China and date back to Ancient times. In one point in time, the Buddhism held a lion as a mark of Buddha. At the time Foo dogs existed and had the resemblance of a miniature lion and for that reason held to great regards. Careful breeding was maintained to keep the appearance. Soon, the dog were being called 'Lion Dogs'

Breeding continued with strict guidelines in place as a result the Lion Dog soon became revered to as a symbol of respect throughout the height of T'and dynasty. A lot of the dogs were to be treated almost as royalty. A miniature-sized Pekingese was known as a 'sleeve dog' as their Chinese rulers could often carry them tucked away in their sleeve.

With the imperial summer palace looted in 1860 by the British, several of these dogs where snatched and taken back to England on the return journey. The Pekingese dogs were soon favored resulting in enthusiasts helping to build on its popularity.

Soon the Pekingese breed was exposed to the wealthy and common people alike resulting in a dramatic increase in numbers. The breed today continues as a devoted companion dog.

Pekingese Care:

To contend with its low energy levels a couple of short walks on a leash or games at home should be sufficient. Pekingese's can make a perfect apartment pet, and should be allowed to live inside like all Toy group members.

These dogs aren't able to tolerate warm weather that well, although more able to cope with temperatures that are moderately cool. Grooming consists a good brushing once or twice per week to maintain its long coat.

Health Information:

Health concerns seen with a Pekingese include KCS, skin fold dermatitis, trichiasis, elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, and patellar luxation. Vets recommend that this breed is checked for eye and knee related problems.
