The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is short in stature, with a long frame, and a all-natural herding dog. Appearance is that of fox-like features, resulting in a highly-rated breed with dog owners around the world.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi's have a temperament that's alert, spunky, and often quick-witted. A dog breed that’s always aiming to please its master, and able to make an excellent watchdog. These dogs can bark constantly, most notable if a stranger should approach.
History Of The Pembroke Welsh Corgi:
The origins of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi date back as far as the 11th century. Although these dogs shared a similiar past to a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, they were an entirely separate breed, located in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
It is difficult to follow the roots of this breed, although it is known that these dogs were highly-rated in assisting farming in rural South Wales. A breed that was great at herding cattle, with a tendency to nip at the heel of the herd to keep the momentum, and also displayed excellent agility.
It was not until the 1920's that a club was established for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed, and at that time attempts where made to help improve on the dogs appearance.
The Cardigan and Pembroke were both recognized as individual breeds in 1934. With the Pembroke Welsh Corgi going on to become the more popular of the two breeds, and by the 1960's the Pembroke has established itself as one of the more favored dog breeds in the world.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi Care:
These dogs are in need of plenty of exercise to contend with its high-energy levels, so daily walks, combined with ample playing and games are required. A great dog to teach tricks and training commands, so able to soon pick-up all advanced training routines.
These dogs are able to cope in cool and warm climate conditions, and can adapt to living outdoors. A dog that thrives on human companionship, so sleeping inside at nights with its family is ideal. Grooming consist of a good brushing once weekly to remove dead hairs.
Health Information:
Health concerns seen with a Pembroke Welsh Corgi include intervertebral disc disease, CHD, epilepsy, and degenerative myelopathy, with vWD, PRA, and urinary stones seen rarely. Vets recommend that these dogs are checked for eye and hip related problems as well as taking DNA for PRA.
