Description: The Petif Basset Griffon Vendeen is a playful and highly affectionate breed, in need of fun and games due to its high energy levels. Its appearance does have a semblance of wire-coated Basset hound - although it is a breed in its own right. And a breed that's at its height of popularity in France.
A hound with an insatiable desire to roam outside to explore and sniff. Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens (PBGV for short) are a social breed, and friendly with other dogs and strangers. Also a great dog to have with small children around, and able to function as a excellent watchdog.
History Of The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has been a established breed since the 16th century, with its ancestry in France, and functioned as a trail hound.
A breed with a long name, but that can be broken down to - Petit being 'small' - Basset being 'low' - Griffon being 'rough coat' - Vendeen meaning the dog's area of origin in France.
The Vendeen region offers a terrain rocky and thick with brush, so ideal for the hunting abilities of a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. A Hound able to slide through underbrush, push through thorns, and chase a rabbit until a job is complete. It wasn't until 1990 that the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized this breed.
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Temperament: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen isn't a dog to be left alone at home for long periods of time. A breed that's more happy to be exploring and tracking scents as there busy-bodies at heart. Exercise can consist of a couple of brisk walks on a secure leash and a run in a yard should also help.
A dog breed able to live outside a lot of the time, although will prefer to sleep with its family at nights. Grooming is a case of a good brushing once or twice each week to get rid of those dead hairs.
Health Information: Health concerns with this breed include Meningitis, Hypothyroidism, Epilepsy, Intervertebral Disk Disease, and Patellar Luxation. Vets recommend that a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is checked for Eye and Hip Problems.
