The Polish Lowland Sheepdog often resembles a over-grown teddy bear with its long coat, and shaggy appearance, yet having the agility and speed to control livestock. A dog that’s seen to be one of the most rated members within the Herding group.
Polish Lowland Sheepdog's are often summed up as loving, playful, and affectionate, with the ability to be a loyal watchdog, and a great protector for its family against intruders. A dog that's great with pets and other dogs, but often seen to be reserved with strangers.
History Of The Polish Lowland Sheepdog:
The origins of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog is in Poland, as its name would suggest, with roots dating back to Ancient times. These dogs are known in most regions of the world as a 'Polski Owczarek Nizinny'. In the U.S., the breeds name is shortened with a nickname of 'PON'
The ancestors of these dogs are believed to a Central Asian breed, called a Tibetan, introduced to Europe by Tibetan traders. Studies indicate that these dogs might of been cross-bred with Hungarian sheepdogs (corded coat), in the 4th century.
For centuries, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog worked on Polish lowlands controlling sheep, until favored interest came from breed enthusiasts in Europe, in 1800's to early 1900's.
After WWII, the popularity of these sheepdogs had dramatically reduced, to an estimated 200 dogs in total. It did not take that long for dedicated breeder to devise a successful breeding program, that went on to succeed. In 2001, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Polish Lowland Sheepdog Care:
These dogs are in need of an active lifestyle to contend with its high levels of energy. Exercise can be met with vigorous games, exercises, and walks on a daily basis. The PON is a breed that's easy to train and enjoys the mental stimulation that comes with obedience training.
The shaggy coat of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog allows it to withstand cooler climate conditions, but unable to cope that well in warm temperatures. Grooming consists of a good brushing three or four times a week to maintain a clean and healthly coat.
Health Information:
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a healthy breed with no major or minor health problem to be noted. Although, vets do recommend that these dogs are checked for eye and hip related concerns.
