DESCRIPTION – The breed 'Pug' derived its name from the Latin term Pugness, meaning "fist". This aptly describes the facial features of the Pug dog breed as it's said to resemble a fist that's clenched. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized this breed in 1885. Since that time it has become popular both as a show dog and a house pet.

PUG PERSONALITY – the Pug breed is abundantly playful, extremely amiable, and displays a confident personality. Often seen as stubborn a bit headstrong when it comes to training, but mostly an enjoyable dog that is delighted to please its owner.

CARE – Pugs dogs need to be exercised on a daily basis, as with all dogs in the Toy category. A 15 to 25 minute walk is ideal or a physical dog game would be adequate.

The Pug isn't the type of dog to be left outside for an extended period of time, as it's more suited to indoor living with the family. Humid and hot temperatures aren't appreciated by this breed. If leaving a Pug in the backyard for a couple of hours, make sure that adequate shade is available.

GROOMING – the Pug needs to be cleaned on a regular basis due to its heavy wrinkles, typically across the neck and face area. It important to dry a Pug off if wet to prevent infection of the skin – this can be common in this breed. Physical characteristics of the Pug include snoring and wheezing.

HEALTH INFORMATION – major health concerns that are liable to affect the Pug dogs is Pug Dog Encephalitis and CHD. Health concerns of a more minor nature are Stenotic Nares, Skin Infections, Elongated Palate, Legg-Perthes, KCS, Hemivertebra, and Patellar Luxation.
