Puppy Barking Problems

As soon as a new puppy is brought into the home, patience is going to be a virtue. A new puppy is not so much different than a newborn child.

A baby has to cry to let you know they are upset or are in need of something. A puppy can only bark and wine to communicate his feelings to you. Although this is quite natural, it does not make it any easier for the new pet owner. Continuous, non-stop barking can be very aggravating.

Puppies tend to get lonesome very easily. It is not their fault. They have grown accustomed to having their mother or other siblings around to keep them company. Therefore, they reach out for a replacement very quickly. That would be you. When you depart, even for a brief moment, they will race with anxiety, until your return.

You do not want to spoil your puppy. This is not the behavior pattern that you want to create. On the other hand, you cannot allow yourself to become frustrated and lose your cool. It is always a tough situation to deal with. So, what are your options? How do you approach a barking problem like this? Here are a few tips:

1. Never flip out and yell at your puppy. This will obviously cause anxiety that your puppy may never fully recover from. Ignore him, before you yell at him. Allow him the proper time to adjust to his new surroundings.

2. There is a product on the market called ‘teaching lead’. It will allow you to keep him close, when possible.

3. You must learn to refrain from habits that will only worsen his anxiety. Do not linger around and drag out long good-byes or Hello’s upon your return. This only builds poor behavior patterns that will increase his anxiety.

4. You can also create a training aid to divert his attention when you want to leave the room. Perhaps a small can with some loose change in it, or a water bottle that will squirt a fresh mist in his direction. These little things can take his mind off your departing.

Problem barking has no real miracle solution. Every puppy is different. Varied responses will comfort one puppy and will have no affect on another. The key here is patience and understanding. Although at first, there may be some lost sleep involved. However, the way you handle this situation, from the very start, will play a permanent role in your puppy's transition into an adult dog.

Give him time, show him love and affection, but do not spoil him, and you will give him the foundation to grow on and your efforts will no doubt be rewarded with a lifetime friend. And all because you had the patience to deal with a barking problem.
