History Of The Samoyed:

The origins of the Samoyed dates back to Ancient times, in the region of Siberia Russia. Back than, its function was to act as a guard dog and to herd reindeer. Today, these dogs are adapted to sled pulling and taking part in herding trials.

The Samoyed breed is so called after nomadic Samoyed citizens, who arrived from central Asia, and settled in the northwestern area of Siberia. In order to survive these dogs need to herd groups of reindeer, which was later used as a food source.

As well as guarding reindeer against attack from a predator, these dogs were also keen hunters, with the ability to track and take down bear. If required, a Samoyed was also able tow sledges and boats.

The Samoyed breed arrived in England in late 1800's, and in the United States in early 1900's. These dogs were soon put to use as sled pulling dogs, due to their highly rated ability to take on this task, with the Samoyed used in the discovery of the South Pole.

Samoyed Care:

These dogs are in need of ample exercise on a daily basis, with a couple of quick walks as well as some vigorous game sessions all ideal. A dog thats often more suited to families with an active lifestyle.

A Samoyed is most suited to climates with cool temperatures, as this breed thrives in Arctic regions, so not able to tolerate warm conditions that well. Grooming consists of a good brushing once or twice a week to contend with its thick coat.

Health Information:

Health concerns seen with a Samoyed include CHD, gastric Torsion, cataracts, and hypothyroidism. Vets recommend that these dogs are checked for DNA for PRA, thyroid, eye, and hip related problems.
