Service Dog Adoption

If looking to add a new adult dog to the family, it's possible to look at adopting a 'retired' service dog.

The International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP) indicated that approximately eight to nine thousand dogs in the U.S. are employed as guide, hearing or service dogs. These canines are offering a service by helping the deaf, guiding the blind, and aiding the disabled.

These service dogs can't continue to work forever, so at some stage these dogs will need to find a new home. To help in this, there are service dog organizations that provide adoption programs.

These dogs are typically in high demand. In view of the intensive obedient training to become a service dog, these canines are completely trained and able to offer companionship from the moment they arrive home.

It takes a very intelligent and special dog to get accepted as a service dog and to enjoy a prosperous career. It's necessary to be in good health, well adjusted, and to indicate all signs of a good student for whatever task the trainers are preparing them for.

These attributes alone, before experiencing the extensive obedient training would make for a wonderful family pet.

So prior to visiting a shelter to adopt or buy a dog, take a moment to look at local facilities that might offer ex-service oriented dogs. This can result in a first-rate family pet.
