Even so, if adopting a rescue dog isn't an option right now, there are several things that can be done to enhance the life of a homeless dog.
Here are six ways to help rescue and shelter dogs for adoption –
• Visit a local canine shelter and simply hang out and play with some of the dogs. This often makes a big difference to their experience at the shelter. Shelter staff often appreciates the help of others to socialize and play with the residence.
Volunteers can generally take a dog for a walk; pamper them by brushing or grooming their coats, or just to be there for them. Shelter dogs don't always get that much attention, so a short visit can often improve their welfare.
• It's possible to volunteer to take a dog to obedience training – this will improve the odds of an adoption.
• Help with washing and grooming for an upcoming adoption fair.
• Organize a fund raising party and donate the proceeds to a local rescue center.
• Act as a foster parent (look after a rescue dog at home) until a suitable permanent home has been found.
Finally, in order to prevent a rescue center from being overcrowded – have your own pets spayed or neutered. |
