Description:
Shih Tzu Dog Breed
The Shih Tzu dog breed is classed as a member of the toy group – the name 'Shih Tzu' came from China, and translates to 'Lion Dog'. Even though this breed is associated with the Chinese, indications show that origins of the Shih Tzu date to back to Tibet in the 17th century. The Shih Tzu was officially recognized by the America Kennel Club in 1969.
Shih Tzu Temperament:
These are lovable companion dogs that enjoy running and playing with their owners. The Shih Tzu can make a wonderful house pet; in addition to being great with strange dogs, pets, children and even visitors.
Care:
Even though a small dog, the Shih Tzu still requires a good deal of exercise. Going for a 10 to 15 minute walk (brisk pace) is ideal, although a good scamper throughout the house can also meet the daily exercise routine.
In a similar way to most companion dogs, the Shih Tzu isn't meant to live outdoors in a kennel. These toy dogs don't cope to well in humid, hot weather. Grooming a Shih Tzu is a regular requirement – due to its luxurious, long coat.
Health Information:
The major concern to affect the health of a Shih Tzu is CHD. Other conditions to mention include Portacaval Shunt, Patellar Luxation, Inguinal Hernia, KCS, Entropion, Otitis Externa, PRA, and Renal Dysplasia. On occasion Cataracts and Dental problems are also seen. Vets recommend that this breed is specifically checked for Eye Problems, DNA for Renal Dysplasia, and Hip Dysplasia.
