History Of The Skye Terrier:
The lifeline of the Skye Terrier breed dates back to 1500's in the region of Scotland. Bred in areas throughout the west coast, a lot of these terriers acted as hunt dogs - often to track foxes and otters. The dogs with the purest breed line where located on the Isle of Skye, which indicates how they become to be known as 'Skye Terrier'.
At one stage there was numerous breeds of terriers all categorized under a single name, but the Skye Terrier known today went on to become the recognized version after Queen Victoria became intridued with it in the 1840's. Resulting in a sharp rise in popularity amoung commoners and wealthy people alike.
The Skye Terrier was granted inclusion in the American Kennel Club in 1887 and soon became a common show dog. Although it has its hunting abilities and distinctive appearance, the Skye Terrier breed has since declined in numbers and is now one of the least common terriers seen in a household.
Skye Terrier Temperament:
These terriers love to explore the great outdoors while still in need of plenty of time to relax in comfort at home. A hunting breed at heart so having time to explore outside each day is often a benefit, but shouldn't be left to cope outside completely.
Care:
Exercise can consist of a couple walks on a secure leash once or twice a day as well as time spent running around the house. A breed that can make a great companion in a apartment if need be. Grooming often calls for a good brushing twice a week to maintain the coat in a neat condition.
Health Information:
The Skye Terriers are a healthy breed with no major heath issues, with minor concerns seen include premature close of distal radius. As a result of a healthy bloodline, no tests are suggested by vets.
