The Sussex Spaniel is a member of the spaniel family, in need of ample affection, and often a very easy and outgoing dog breed. At times laid back and aloof, although always willing to go bird hunting. This is one breed content to in a city apartment or a larger property.

In times of hunting a Sussex Spaniel can often be noisy, and that's a primary reason for this breed being less favored with hunters than other spaniels breed or sporting group members. And without sufficient attention to these dogs it will also howl and bark.

History Of The Sussex Spaniel:

The origins of this breed dates back to sometime in the early 1820's when an article was written - namely 'The spaniel of Sussex' in a sports edition. The name also came from Sussex, England, which was established as a large breeding area in 1795.

Soon the spaniel was a favored and admired breed in several of the estates in Sussex Country. A dog with highly-rated abilities for hunting, although slow-working at times, but had outstanding smell once on the trails.

The Sussex Spaniel wasn't to become as admired with the hunters in America - in general the American's preferred a breed that displayed more overall speed. Although the breed went on to become one of the initial breeds to be recognized by the American Kennel Club, they where almost close to extinction in the early 1900's.

In 1954, the breed was cross-bred with a Clumber Spaniel in a attempt to expand the gene pool of the breed. However, the number of Sussex Spaniel's still continue to be low, and one of the rarest members of the AKC.

Sussex Spaniel Care:

In need of ample daily exercise to remain content, although as a slow-moving spaniel, an exercise routine can consist of several laps around a backyard or a quick walk on a secure leash each day.

The Sussex Spaniel is a affectionate breed able to spend its days outside in a yard, and preferring to return to its family home at night. Grooming consists of a good brushing once or twice per week to maintain a neat coat.

Health Information:

Health problems seen with a Sussex Spaniel include CHD and Intervertebral disk disease, enlarged heart, heart murmurs and otitis externa.
