Tibetan Terrier Dog Breed

The Tibetan Terrier is a proud member and all-purpose breed within the Non-Sporting group. These dogs have a shaggy, adorable nature, with a compact size - maintaining muscularity and physical power.

The Tibetan Terrier has a temperament that's a loving, gentle canine. A dog that can make a loyal companion, often friendly with other pets and dogs, but still reserved somewhat with strangers.

History Of The Tibetan Terrier:

The origins of the Tibetan Terrier isn't entirely clear, although its believed that these dogs where bred inside Lamaist monasteries some 2000 years back. Often used to assist with working tasks, as well as being a companion and holy dog.

None of these canines where traded, often held to such a high regard, so rarely seen outside of Tibet, unless received as a special gift. One such gentlemen to receive as a gift was Dr. Grieg, who went on to breeding further litters, with this starting in the 1920's.

The Tibetan Terrier first arrived in the United Kingdom in 1937, with the breed later to follow on to America in the 1950's. Later in 1973, these dogs where officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Tibetan Terrier Care:

A terrier that's great for those in need of a quiet and relaxing breed to have indoors, but once outdoors it loves looking for adventures and roaming in open spaces.

Exercise can consist or a walk on a secure leash, as well as games in a backyard. Mental stimulation is also appreciated.

These dogs are able to tolerate moderately cool and hot temperatures but isn't suited to living outside. Can be suited as an apartment dog, as well as a indoor dog with outside access throughout the day. Grooming consists of a good brushing once or twice a week to maintain its coat.

Health Information:

Health concerns seen with a Tibetan Terrier include lens luxation, PRA, cataracts, ceroid lipofuscinosis, patellar luxation, and CHD, with distichiasis seen rarely. Vets recommend that these dogs are checked for thyroid, eye, and hip related problems.
