The Toy Fox Terrier is blessed with an abundance of energy, loves to investigate outdoors, and a highly affectionate and fun loving member of the Toy Group. A breed in need of companionship with ample playtime with other household pets or members of the family. A Toy Fox Terrier can make an outstanding house pet, great with small children around, or being in a one-person household.
History Of The Toy Fox Terrier:
Although a Toy Fox Terrier is highly rated breed in households across the US, the origin of this breed dates only as far as the 1900's. The Smooth Fox Terriers where a constant favorite of farmers in the United States. Favored at the time as both a companion and for chasing away small pests and rodents.
As time went by, the small dogs were crossbred with a variety of toy breeds, such as the Italian Greyhound, Toy Manchester Terrier, and Chihuahua. This resulted in a breed small in size to that of a Smooth Fox Terrier, with a couple of noticeable differences to its larger version. It was also noted to its feisty temperament lessened through the breeding process.
Initially register with the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a 'Smooth Fox Terrier', the name was later change in 1936 to the Toy Fox Terrier when the breed was granted their own breed status.
Toy Fox Terrier Temperament:
Owning a Toy Fox Terrier does call for a combination of exercise, love, ample playtime, and attention. Daily activity is a must to keep up with the bundles of energy. In need of physical playtime as well as mental stimulation to remain content. Able to take on simple obedience commands and routines with ease.
A Toy Fox Terrier loves to spend time digging and barking, so access to a fenced-in, safe yard is a must. Living outdoors isn't practical with this breed. Sleeping inside with its family at nights is ideal. Unable to tolerate the cooler climates and might be in need of additional bedding at nights in the winter months. Grooming consists of a good brushing once or twice per week, a breed that's easy to maintain with its short coat that doesn't shed that often.
Health Information:
Health concerns seen with a Toy Fox Terrier include patellar luxation, congenital hypothyroidism with goiter, demodicosis, and Legg Calve Perthes, while vWD is seen rarely. Vets recommend that this breed is check in particular for thyroid and knee problems, vWD, and DNA for congenital hypothyroidism.
