In time, these efficient ratter Terriers were cross breed with a Whippet racer, and that resulting in the Manchester Terrier breed that's known today. Although, originally, the new breed continued to be called a Black and Tan Terrier in view of the also identical appearance. Later in 1922, the official name of 'Manchester Terrier' was given to the breed.

It's also believed that part of the bloodline descended from the Italian Greyhound, thought to be mixed in the latter half of the 1800's. This might explain the reason why the breed varied in size. The miniature version was soon sough after and breeders soon created the small version - Toy Manchester Terrier.
