History Of The Toy Poodle:

The origins of the Toy Poodle date back to 1500's Germany and Central Europe, with a history that's very similar to that of the Miniature Poodle and Standard Poodle.

The earliest version of these Poodles is believed to be the Barbet dog. Also featuring in its root are several rough-coated breeds. The Barbet was to make its way through Hungary, France, Russia, and several other neighboring countries. Although, it was the German variation of these dogs that had the highest influence on the Poodles that are recognized today.

The Toy Poodle is a first-class water dog, and in fact where called after the term 'pfudel' which translates to splashing in German. In France, the breed’s abilities at hunting were acknowledged, and referred to the breed as 'caniche' - which relates to the dogs duck-hunting skill. These Poodle's where also used to operate as a military service dog, as well as functioning as a herding, a guide dog, for pulling wagons, and guarding duties.

Once established as a popular breed, the Poodle was named as the official breed of France, and was seen to be fashionable with women. A smaller variation of these dogs was successfully bred, although by the 1920's numbers had declined. In time, the Toy Poodle was re-populated and is now seen as a highly popular household pet.

Toy Poodle Care:

These dogs are in need of plenty of interactive with its family in order to remain content. With a high level of energy, exercise for these dogs can consist of several quick walks on a leash, as well as time to roam outside in a secure yard. These dogs aren't meant to live outside, and should always sleep inside with its family at nights.

Grooming consists of a good brushing on a daily basis if at all possible, to maintain the Toy Poodle's coat and avoid matting. Having these dogs professionally clip four times, each year can also help.

Health conditions seen with the Toy Poodle breed include Legg-Perthes, PRA, patellar, epilepsy, trichiasis, cataracts, and lacrimal duct atresia, with intervertebral disk degeneration and urolithiasis seen rarely. Vets recommend that these dogs are checked for eye, hip, and knee related issues.
