This overnight stay could turn out to be fun or an unnerving disaster. Of course, that depends on how the situation is handled.
Firstly, be certain to take along all the dogs gear that might come in handy for the overnight stay. It could prove a problem if some of the important items are left behind. Such items include dog food and treats, and a crate that suit’s the dogs size.
Take the dogs usual bedding, as this will make you dog feel comfortable when staying somewhere strange. This will also put the hosts mind at rest, knowing that the dog isn’t going to be shedding its coat over the furniture.
Having a selection of chew toys is often a good idea when it comes to traveling with a dog. Be cautious in different surroundings, as everything is new and might be tempting to the dog’s mouth. Inside your own home, rules have already been established, and your pet knows how to behave. Seeing your dog chewing on the furniture at the guests house is the last thing you wish to see.
If small children are living at the destination - take the time to carefully introduce your dog. Children aren’t always as cautious as we would want them to be.
Even for a dog that is tame with other people and with small children - if suddenly introduced to overly excited kids this can startle the dog. Needless surprises could result in negative behaviour - such as biting or nipping.
If for any reason a dog might be aggressive in unfamiliar surroundings, it might be wise to use a kennel or the services of a pet sitter as an alternative to travel with dog.
