Description: The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a easy-going, laid-back breed that isn't quite as high spirited as a English Springer. In need of ample exercise and loves to spend time bird hunting, so woodlands make the ideal setting for this canine.

An independent dog by nature, the Welsh Springer Spaniel makes an excellent house pet and soon becomes devoted to its family. Can be timid in the presence of strangers and often seen to be a very sensitive breed.

History Of The Welsh Springer Spaniel: Research on Welsh Springer Spaniels dates back to the 1300's - indicated in records of the Laws of Whales. Although, it isn't clear as to whether early breeds are directly associated to Welch Springer’s seen today.

Some evidence indicates that Welsh Springer Spaniels might have started with English Springer’s or a mix of Clumber Spaniel and English Springer’s. A series of Land Spaniels were in existence in Wales for a long time prior to emergence of the Welsh Springer, although land spaniels weren't likely to be a uniformed group of dogs.

Throughout those times, both Welsh Spaniels and English Spaniels where exhibited in shows alongside one another with strikingly similar features, with the main variation being color. Later Welsh Spaniels soared in popularity and in 1906 acknowledged by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Welsh Springer Spaniel Temperament: The Welsh Springer Spaniels is a solid, hunting dog with a eager sense of small able to retrieve and flush game on either land or water. Because of this keen sense of tracking this breed is in need of ample outside space to play and run. Having an open space for quick bursts is ideal.

While in need of a secure area to roam throughout the day, Welsh Spaniels perfer to spend their nights inside with he rest of the family. To keep up with grooming requirements, a good brushing is needed to tackle the long and lustrous coat twice weekly.

Health Information: Health concerns seen with the Welsh Springer Spaniel include CHD, Glaucoma, Otitis Externa, and Epilepsy. Cataracts are seen rarely. Vets recommend that this breed is checked for Eye and Potential Hip problems.
