It is said that the Whippet was crossed with Ratting Terriers to increase quickness and speed. The onset of the Industrial Revolution marked the arrival of the Whippet breed. Vast numbers of workers form rural area moved their entire livelihoods to the industrialized regions. In turn, the Whippets followed as a source of amusement.

The Whippets were also used to aid the poor to procure food, and for earning extra income for the families. These pets were valued, loved, and enjoyed everything with their human companion.

Whippet racing didn't take off quite as well and commercially as the Greyhound races did. It does still remain somewhat popular as an amateur sporting event.

The Whippet dog breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888.

WHIPPET TEMPERAMENT – Whippet dogs are said to be one of the most demonstrated and obedient of the sighthounds. A gentle breed with children and can be overly-sensitive, both physically and mentally. So, not faring well if yelled at or treated harshly.

CARE – whippets love to run, but are also able to do well in apartment living, provided that a daily walk or two is given. This breed isn't keen on the cold weather, and needs a warm and comfy bedding to be comfortable in.

GROOMING – the coat is extremely short, so grooming is kept to a minimum with the Whippet breed.

HEALTH INFORMATION – a very healthy breed with the only major concern to look out for is that of potential eye problems.
